LaVerne Duane Brue, the son of Millerd and Manda (Holstad) Brue, was born August 8, 1933. He attended country schools and graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1951. LaVerne then went into the U.S. Army serving time in Korea. Upon his discharge, LaVerne returned to Iowa to farm the family farm with his parents.

On February 8, 1957, LaVerne was united in marriage to Gloriann Tjarks. Together, they raised four children, David, Carolyn, Mary Beth, and Diane, on a farm southeast of Buffalo Center. He loved spending time with his family. After Gloriann’s death in 1998, LaVerne was united in marriage to Judith (Harrison) Birst on May 23, 2009.

LaVerne was an adventurer. Gloriann and he traveled extensively, often with the family in tow, seeing much of the US and Canada. He also traveled internationally, visiting Norway, Vietnam, Australia and New Zealand and took a memorable trip to South Korea in 2016 as part of the Korea Revisit Program.

LaVerne loved to fly. He took his small plane all over the US, including three trips flying to and around Alaska. He relished his trips to Australia where he flew a small plane around the island as part of a group of private pilots. While wintering in Tucson, he loved spending time at Ryan Airfield talking airplanes and flying with his pilot buddies.

He was a farmer until his last days, checking the markets daily. He took frequent drives to watch the harvest, occasionally offering just a bit of coaching to his son-in-law and grandsons.

LaVerne was faithful to his Lord. He served as a deacon for many years at the Congregational Church in Buffalo Center and enjoyed attending First Baptist Church in Forest City for the past 20 years. His Bible is well-marked with notes and underlining. He self-reflected and applied the Scripture to how he lived and loved even in the most difficult of circumstances. As he approached older age, his devotion to renewing his mind and opening his heart was evident to all who were blessed to be part of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Judith; daughter Carolyn Brue of Minneapolis, MN; daughter Mary Beth (Joe) McEuen of St Louis, MO; daughter Diane (Brent) Matson of Buffalo Center; daughter-in-law Barbara Brue of Waukee, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; three sisters (Mavis Johnson, Elaine Hetland, and Joan Sunde), and many family and friends.

LaVerne is preceded in death by his parents, first wife Gloriann Brue, son David Brue, and son-in-law Scott Arnevik.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be given to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention or Gideons International. The family wishes to thank Hospice of North Iowa for their care in his final months.
